Statement from Phillip - Kerry Katona This Morning Interview

By Ellen - Posted on 24 October 2008

"Though there is nothing funny about this whole affair, the front page of today's 'Daily Mirror' did make me laugh. Here's what actually happened. After the interview Kerry was obviously angry with the way the interview had gone. The three of us politely said goodbye and she left the studio with her husband. I didn't even see Mark leave the studio after the interview because Fern and I were looking at each other in shock at what we had just witnessed. At no point did Mark approach me, no voices were raised in my earshot, no fingers were pointed, no threats were made and absolutely nobody had to be restrained!

I'm sure that a lot of Kerry's fans will be as concerned about her well-being as we are. For the record. Kerry arrived very late at the studio with her husband where she met her MTV crew. There was no time between her arrival and us going on air to check how she was. Usually, a member of our team would check that a guest is happy before they get to the studio. Sadly in this case, there wasn't the opportunity. If a problem had been flagged up we would have started the show with another item whilst we all decided what was the best course of action. At no point did Fern or I have drink or drug questions on our agenda. Actually, because Kerry has talked at length on This Morning on those subjects in the past we considered that topic to have been covered. She was booked to talk about her new body and new programme. We were going to discuss her finances, but were expressly told that if that topic arose, she would walk out. Our team felt that she was agitated because she was so late, but no other concerns were raised.

As the interview began, it was obvious that something was wrong. We left it for as long as we could, but it was clear that she was slurring her speech so much, something had to be said. It's never good to have to check, live on air, if someone is ok, but I think that the This Morning audience would have thought us un-proffessional if something wasn't said. We were accused of ambushing Kerry but I'm afraid she ambushed herself. Anyone who regularly watches This Morning will know that it's not our style to set friends up, or to score points off them.

For her fans and for Kerry I stand by what I said live on the Chris Moyles show. I don't think she should ever have been put in that situation. For whatever reason she 'wasn't right' and those around her should have spotted that in the car on the way to the studio and protected her. She is a woman and mother who needs to be cared for and looked after, not paraded in front of the cameras in a condition that was bound to attract negative attention. Anyone who does't recognise that is, I believe, acting in a very irresponsible way and I would question their motives.

I have known Kerry a long time, I am as concerned for her as her many fans. I hope she is ok and I wish her nothing but happiness and health."
